Ozempic Weight Loss Drug: Is It Safe To Take This Injection For Quick Weight Loss? Read On To Know Everything About It.
Ozempic has recently taken social media by storm, gaining attention for its ability to induce rapid weight loss along with growing concerns about its potential side effects. Originally designed and prescribed as a treatment for Type-2 Diabetes, the drug has now become a popularized “quick fix” for weight management. Its sudden rise to fame has made it a controversial subject, as its high cost and the risks associated with its use raise questions about its safety and long-term effects. While some celebrities have openly endorsed Ozempic, touting its effectiveness, others have voiced strong opposition, citing the dangers and ethical concerns tied to its off-label use.
The surge in its popularity has led people, even in India, to seek it through the grey market or opt for available alternatives within the same category. Health experts caution that the indiscriminate use of many of these drugs, including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound, could result in unexpected side effects. In India, two other drugs are being used for weight loss: liraglutide, an injectable that has been available for several years, and an oral form of semaglutide known as Rybelsus.
Dangerous Side Effects of Taking Drugs For Weight Loss
“Not only Ozempic but most weight loss drugs that lead to drastic weight reduction come with their own share of risks. Therefore, taking these medications, whether in injectable or oral form, should never be done without proper medical supervision. Traditional medicine teaches that every individual has a unique body type and metabolism, and taking any medication without assessing a person’s constitution can be ineffective or even harmful,” says Dr Ravishankar Polisetty, the pioneer of Poly Scientific Ayurveda (PSA).
He suggests that blending traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern medicine can help reduce the use of drugs and develop personalised treatment plans for individuals aiming for weight loss. “Take, for example, two celebrities following different approaches to weight loss. One succeeds with intermittent fasting, while the other loses weight by eating small meals every 1.5 to 2 hours. This demonstrates that their metabolic types are different. So, how do we determine someone’s metabolic type? This is where Poly Scientific Ayurveda can be effective,” explains Dr Polisetty.
He says that by creating animal models of the three Ayurvedic doshas-Vata, Pitta, and Kapha-PSA researchers studied how these doshas affect metabolic function. “For instance, Vata types have hyper-excitable tissues that burn ATP (the energy molecule derived from glucose) faster, leading to quicker energy depletion. These individuals require a steady supply of glucose and benefit from eating every 1.5 to 2 hours, rather than practicing intermittent fasting,” elucidates Dr Polisetty.
On the other hand, Pitta types are characterized by hyperactive mitochondria, which means they burn glucose quickly, while Kapha types are both hypo-excitable and hypo-metabolic. “That means Kapha individuals, due to their slow metabolism, are more likely to benefit from drugs like Ozempic and practices like intermittent fasting,” says the expert.
He adds that recognised PSA practitioners can assess an individual’s metabolic fingerprint through the VPK 42 fingerprint method. “This helps them tailor a personalised regimen that includes diet, exercise, pranayama, and yoga, based on one’s metabolic type and body constitution. This approach offers sustainable, long-term results, making it more than just a complementary solution, but a mainstream approach to achieving health and wellness,” concludes Dr Polisetty.
Conclusion: Always consult with your doctor or a healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes for weight loss. They can provide personalized guidance based on your medical history and current health status.
